Sophisticated Volume

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation surgery is a cosmetic surgery procedure intended to increase breast volume and improve the shape of the breasts. This is achieved by placing a breast implant device—either saline breast implants or silicone breast implants—beneath the breast tissue or the chest wall muscle. While often referred to colloquially as a "boob job," the procedure is a sophisticated surgical art that can also involve fat transfer for a more subtle enhancement. It is important to remember that breast implants are not lifetime devices, and some women may eventually require revision surgery or choose to have their implants removed.

What is the Breast Augmentation procedure like?

Bespoke Artistry & Placement

Performed under general anesthesia, the breast augmentation procedure is highly customized. Dr. Breslow discusses various surgical approaches and implant placement options—such as placing the implant over or under the chest wall muscle—to achieve the most natural look. Incisions are strategically placed in the breast area (under the fold, around the nipple, or in the armpit) to minimize visible scarring. Dr. Breslow regularly reviews FDA updates and study results to ensure the highest safety standards for every patient.

Resolving the Loss of Volume

What conditions does Breast Augmentation address?

Have recent life changes, such as a mastectomy, weight loss, or childbirth, changed your breast volume? Or maybe you’ve always wished for fuller, more shapely breasts? Age, weight loss, and genetics can all impact breast volume, leading to self-esteem challenges and physical concerns. Our breast augmentation procedures can:

  • Create a beautiful, curvaceous bust line.
  • Restore lost volume and achieve optimal breast size.
  • Improve overall body balance and silhouette.

Additionally, it is a vital part of reconstructive surgery and breast reconstruction for those who have undergone treatment for breast cancer.

What are the benefits of Breast Augmentation?

Proportionality & Harmony

The most significant benefits are increased volume and improved self-image. Patients often feel a significant boost in self-esteem and are more confident in swimwear and form-fitting clothing. Beyond aesthetics, the use of silicone gel or salt water (saline) fillers allows for a texture and weight that feels natural. For many, it is about reclaiming a sense of femininity and balance that was previously missing.

Is Breast Augmentation Right for You?

Finding Your Signature Look

The ideal candidate is a healthy woman with realistic expectations seeking to improve her breast contour. To help determine your candidacy for breast augmentation, ask yourself the following:

  • Do your breasts lack volume or appear deflated?
  • Are they noticeably different sizes or sagging?
  • Have you had to have a breast removed (mastectomy)?
  • Does this affect your body confidence and well-being?

If so, you’re not alone. Many women in Paramus, and throughout Bergen County, find renewed confidence and self-assurance through breast augmentation. Before you undergo breast augmentation, Dr. Breslow provides a patient decision checklist to ensure you are fully informed about implant types and potential risks, such as capsular contracture (hardened scar tissue) or breast implant rupture.

"The office is immaculate and the staff is beyond helpful. I would definitely recommend this practice to anyone thinking about breast augmentation. I explained what outcome I wanted from the surgery and I was very satisfied with my results. I asked for full but natural and it came out to be that way. Also my recovery went well and whenever I had a question he would respond right away."

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Most patients experience a smooth recovery over a few weeks. You may feel some breast pain or tightness in the chest muscles initially, which is managed with medication. We monitor for complications such as implant rupture or excessive bleeding and recommend regular follow-ups. For those with silicone implants, the FDA recommends periodic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to check for a silent breast implant rupture.

Breast Augmentation Results

Visualizing the Results

You will see an immediate change in breast volume. While swelling takes a few weeks to subside, the augmented breasts will begin to look and feel more natural as the breast tissue relaxes.

While not permanent "lifetime devices," modern silicone and saline breast implants are designed to be durable. Most women enjoy their results for 10 to 20 years before considering a revision surgery.

Why Choose the Breslow Medical Center for your Breast Augmentation?

Don’t Settle for Alternatives

Most products or procedures that offer bigger, fuller breasts tend to over-promise and underdeliver. The effects are either temporary, barely noticeable, or flat-out don’t work. This might be why none have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to date.

Your best bet for long-lasting, larger breasts with a natural look and feel is surgical breast augmentation.

The decision to undergo breast augmentation is a very personal one. Like any surgery, it should be approached thoughtfully and with an understanding of the whole procedure. This decision should not be based solely on advertising. The Breslow Center offers:

  • Experienced, board-certified surgeons.
  • Natural-looking, long-lasting results.
  • Personalized consultations and compassionate care.
  • Hundreds of satisfied patients

Don’t settle for temporary solutions or unproven claims. Choose a trusted surgeon and achieve your dream breasts with safe, effective breast augmentation surgery. Contact us today for a consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

These are not the same thing. A breast lift reshapes and sculpts the nipples and breast mound, whereas a breast augmentation uses implants to increase breast size. If you would like your breasts to have a perkier, more youthful appearance, but don't necessarily want them to look bigger, breast lift surgery can be performed without implants.

The procedure you choose depends on your goals. Some patients choose a breast augmentation, and some get both. A good first step would be to discuss what you want with a licensed surgeon who can help you decide which cosmetic procedure(s) would be best for you.

Saline Implants

As the name implies, these implants are filled with saline, a sterile saltwater solution. This type of implant is filled after it is inserted into the body, allowing a minor adjustment in size during your surgery to achieve the aesthetic outcome you want. In the rare event of rupture and deflation, the saline can be easily absorbed by the body, unlike gel implants. That being said, these implants may not be the best option for women with naturally smaller breasts, thin skin, or little breast fat. This is because it could increase the risk of visible rippling below the surface of your breast tissue or skin.

Silicone Implants

More closely matching the look and feel of natural breast tissue than saline implants, silicone implants are much less prone to visible rippling below the skin. This type of implant is more pliable because the cohesive silicone gel feels much like a soft "gummy bear". Ask our plastic surgery specialist about how to get gummy bear implants. Other types of breast implants take fat deposits from other parts of your body to initiate a fat transfer to your breasts.

As with any surgery, some scarring is inevitable. But with the right techniques, most scar tissue can be hidden, and with the right aftercare, its presence can be reduced, and it will fade over time.

For most women, the answer is “yes", you will be able to breastfeed just fine if you've undergone breast augmentation surgery. That said, you should share with your surgeon if you plan, or are even considering, breastfeeding in the future, as this might influence how they perform the procedure. Some surgeries can affect (or even sever) the nerves and ducts within the breasts, this changing how the breasts are stimulated during nursing (and thus, milk supply). That said, if your incisions are under the fold of the breast or through your armpit, you should have no problems breastfeeding.

Our experience with dozens of patients confirms that partial sensation loss can happen — but it only occurs in about 5% of breast augmentation surgeries. For most people, nipple sensation gradually returns to normal in about 3 to 6 months following surgery. (On the other hand, long-lasting breast pain is not a common side effect and should be brought to a doctor's attention immediately.)

If you're researching breast augmentation, you have most likely run across the term 'Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).’ This is not a kind of breast cancer, but rather a rare immune system cancer. It appears that having textured implants is a risk factor for this disease. That said, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons estimates the lifetime risk of BIA-ALCL at 1 in 2,207 cases or 1 in 86,029 cases. In other words, the risk is small, but not zero. You should discuss the risk with your doctor before scheduling surgery. If you suspect you have symptoms of BIA-ALCL, contact your physician immediately.

The actual price of a breast augmentation procedure depends on a number of factors, including the type of implants used, the time spent in the OR, and the kinds of anesthetics used. Price also varies by state (though the American Society of Plastic Surgeons estimates an average cost of $4,294 nationwide). Costs will also naturally be higher when the procedure is performed by an experienced surgeon and team.

Most women who undergo breast augmentation say that the procedure is worth it. Recent advances in this surgery have made it both safer and more affordable. While everyone's situation is different, it is worth asking: How much do you value your own confidence? What would you pay to love the way your body looks?
