Cheek Augmentation at The Breslow Center for Plastic Surgery

Achieve a More Defined, Balanced Look

High cheekbones have long been considered a desirable facial feature. For individuals with diminished cheekbone structure and a desire for more prominent cheeks, implant-based cheek augmentation can help. This is a very safe and effective way to augment the cheeks and enhance your overall facial appearance.

At the Breslow Center for Plastic Surgery, Dr. Breslow performs cheek augmentation on an outpatient basis with either general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. Drawing on two decades of experience, he ensures your results are harmonized with your unique facial anatomy, providing the refined profile you’ve been seeking.

The Definition of Elegance

What Is Cheek Augmentation?

Cheek augmentation is a versatile procedure intended to improve the contour and volume of the malar (cheek) area. For some, it is a way to create the "high-cheekbone" energy they weren't born with; for others, it is a restorative measure to address the volume loss that occurs with age. By adding mid-face projection, the procedure can subtly lift the lower face, softening the appearance of nasolabial folds and providing a more youthful frame.

The cornerstone of Dr. Breslow’s surgical approach is cheek implants, which utilize biocompatible materials like silicone or Porex to provide a permanent, defined lift for patients with naturally underdeveloped bone structure.

For patients seeking a more natural alternative, Dr. Breslow performs autologous fat transfer, a technique that harvests fat from the patient's own body—such as the abdomen or thighs—to restore mid-face fullness with long-lasting results. Additionally, for those desiring a non-surgical "liquid lift," he offers advanced dermal fillers like Juvéderm Voluma and Radiesse, which provide immediate contouring and can last up to two years.

What Is the Cheek Implant Procedure Like?

The Precision Placement Protocol

The surgery takes approximately one to one-and-a-half hours to complete. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, an incision is made on the inside of the mouth along the upper border between the lip and teeth. Dr. Breslow then dissects the area along the bone to make room, or a “pocket,” for the implant. The implant is then inserted into this pocket, and the incision is closed with absorbable sutures.

Several implants may be used. Commonly, silicone or Porex implants are used to enhance the cheeks. Discomfort is generally mild following cheek augmentation and can be managed with medication. Patients will need to eat soft foods for one week. Swelling is common and may take three to six weeks to resolve. Because the sutures are dissolvable, they do not need to be removed and will dissolve on their own.

A Youthful Lift

What Conditions Does Cheek Augmentation Address?

This procedure is the definitive answer for "sunken" cheeks or a flat mid-face. It resolves the tired appearance caused by weight loss or aging and corrects facial asymmetry where one cheekbone may be more prominent than the other. By restoring volume, it also addresses minor mid-face skin sagging, "filling" the skin from within to create a smoother, tighter appearance.

What Are the Benefits of Cheek Augmentation?

Effortless Symmetry

The most striking benefit is the instant restoration of facial balance. High, well-defined cheeks are a universal hallmark of beauty and health; they draw the eyes upward and provide a more slender and toned silhouette. Because the results move naturally with your expressions, the enhancement looks effortless. Patients often find that their face appears lifted without the need for a full surgical facelift.

Is Cheek Augmentation Right for Me?

Elegance on Your Own Terms

The ideal candidate for cheek implants is someone who wants more definition in their mid-face or wants to correct a hollowed appearance. Individuals who feel that the volume of their cheeks has diminished with age may be better candidates for fat grafting or injectable filler treatments.

Surgical candidates should be in good health and have realistic expectations about the subtle, yet impactful, nature of the results. Whether you are in your 30s looking to enhance your features or in your 50s looking to restore them, we tailor our approach to your personal aesthetic and lifestyle.

Before and After

Face Procedures

The Seamless Transition

Cheek Augmentation Recovery

For surgical implants, work can usually be resumed after one week. You will notice the new, firmer contours of your face almost immediately, with final results settling beautifully over a few weeks. Surgical implants are permanent, while dermal fillers can maintain your look for 12 to 24 months, providing a flexible path to long-term radiance. Fat transfer to the cheeks provides long-lasting results as long as you maintain a stable weight.

Cheek Augmentation Results

Visualizing the Glow

The transformation following cheek augmentation is often described as the "missing piece" of a refreshed profile. Almost immediately, you will notice a sophisticated lift in the mid-face that subtly pulls the lower face upward, softening the appearance of tired shadows and nasolabial folds. This newfound volume creates a soft, youthful pop in your expression, highlighting your eyes and defining a more athletic, high-definition jawline. While the initial contours are visible as soon as you leave our suite, the enhanced contours truly settle once any minor, initial swelling subsides—typically within a few days for fillers and a few weeks for surgical options. You will enjoy a polished, harmonious reflection that looks entirely natural.

Cheek Augmentation

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of cheek augmentation varies significantly based on whether you choose non-surgical dermal fillers or permanent surgical cheek implants. On average, filler treatments are priced per syringe, while surgical costs include the surgeon’s fee, anesthesia, and facility fees. During your consultation at our Paramus office, we provide a detailed, transparent quote tailored to your specific treatment plan.

Cheek fillers are a non-surgical, temporary treatment using injectable gels to add volume. Fillers typically last 12 to 24 months. Cheek implants are small, biocompatible devices surgically placed over the cheekbones for a permanent structural change. Dr. Breslow will help you decide between the two based on your desired level of permanence and the amount of projection needed to balance your features.

Yes. By restoring volume to the mid-face, cheek augmentation can provide a subtle lift to the skin directly below the eyes. This often softens the appearance of tear troughs and hollows, making you look more rested and vibrant without necessarily requiring separate under-eye treatment.

For filler injections, we use a topical numbing cream, and many fillers contain lidocaine, making the experience very comfortable. Surgical augmentation is performed under anesthesia, so you will feel no pain during the procedure. Post-surgical discomfort is typically mild and well-managed with standard medications and cold compresses.

When performed by an expert like Dr. Breslow, cheek implants are selected to mimic the natural feel of your bone structure. They are placed deep against the cheekbone and beneath the muscle, ensuring they are not visible to the eye or palpable to the touch. The result is a natural, defined contour that moves seamlessly with your facial expressions.

Absolutely. Cheek augmentation is often combined with a facelift or eyelid lift to achieve comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Because sagging skin and volume loss often occur simultaneously, combining these treatments ensures that the face's structure is restored while the skin is refined.

Risks and complications associated with cheek augmentation are generally rare. As with any surgical procedure, bleeding and infection may occur. Other potential complications may include implant malposition or cheek asymmetry, and changes or loss of sensation in the cheeks.
