Definition Meets Volume

What Are Lip Fillers?

Lip fillers are a form of dermal filler, which are injected under the skin to fill out wrinkles and creases. Our Juvederm is the gold-standard filler, using calcium hydroxylapatite in a water-based gel to plump & smooth the skin.

Collagen was once a popular choice for lip fillers, but today most sophisticated fillers contain hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is produced naturally by the human body as a filler and lubricant that helps keep tissues hydrated. However, the body produces less hyaluronic acid with age.

Lip fillers are used to enhance lip definition and fullness, addressing thin lips or wrinkles around the lips. Treatments are safe, and results are non-permanent. Lip fillers are a temporary solution, so repeat visits are required to maintain the appearance of fuller lips. However, they’re considered ideal for anyone who doesn’t want to undergo surgery.

Other Uses for Dermal Fillers

At the Breslow Center, we also offer dermal fillers for:

  • Jawline – to reduce the appearance of marionette lines running from the corners of the mouth to the chin
  • Cheeks – to create a fuller, rounder appearance
  • Hands – to achieve younger-looking hands with a less veiny appearance

Focus & Precision

How Lip Fillers Work

Lip fillers and dermal fillers in general typically use a synthetic version of hyaluronic acid. Both natural and synthetic versions have gel-like properties that enable each molecule to hold more than 1,000 times its weight in water. Because of this, along with its naturally occurring in the human body, hyaluronic acid is an extremely effective dermal filler.

Because of its skin-plumping properties, hyaluronic acid is also commonly used as an ingredient in anti-aging serums and lotions. However, hyaluronic acid is injected directly into the lip area, providing an immediate, more visible result than topical products.

Our patients receive lip fillers to add volume to their lips and reduce naturally occurring smile lines and wrinkles. A lip filler treatment can also smooth the appearance of lip lines around the mouth. Our board-certified medical spa professionals use a gentle, non-surgical injection technique that reduces tissue trauma and any side effects that a lip augmentation may have, such as mild bruising around the injection sites.

What Do Lip Fillers Cost?

At the Breslow Center, Juvéderm Ultra Plus costs $750 per 1cc syringe, while Juvéderm Volbella costs $450 per 0.5cc syringe. Most lip enhancement treatments only require one syringe.

Best Lip Injection Brands

Targeted Refinement

At the Breslow Center in New Jersey, we use Juvéderm lip fillers such as Ultra Plus and Volbella for their high quality and trusted reputation. Juvéderm Ultra Plus is excellent for smoothing out facial lines and wrinkles around the lips and is our “go-to” product for providing fullness and shapeliness to the lips. Results are immediate and typically last 8-10 months.

Juvéderm Volbella is also excellent for improving lip contour while subtly enhancing lip volume. It may also be used together with other fillers to boost the lips and etched-in vertical lip lines, also known as “smoker’s lines.” Treatments typically last one year.

Other Juvéderm filler brands are available to treat different areas, such as the cheeks and jawline. Each type of filler has undergone extensive clinical trials to prove its efficacy for a particular type of treatment. Therefore, it’s important to use the correct type of filler for each treatment.

Are You a Good Candidate for Lip Fillers?

Discover Your Shape

Lip fillers are ideal for those with naturally thin lips or whose lips have thinned as a result of aging. If you’re looking for fuller, more sensual lips, fillers will get you the results you want. And because they’re minimally invasive, they’re suitable for anyone who wants to avoid surgery.

Before your consultation, your injector will ask about your medical history. You should let them know if you’re taking any medication or if you’re a smoker. Both factors could influence blood clotting and, therefore, alter the texture of your lips.

Your injector will also need to know if you have any allergies or have experienced allergic reactions to filler treatments in the past. Lip fillers may not be suitable for individuals with certain medical conditions that affect the healing process, such as diabetes or blood-clotting disorders.

It’s important to be honest when answering any medical questions asked of you, as it helps your Injector find the best treatment for you. Lip fillers are only effective for a fixed period of time – approximately 6-12 months, depending on the product used. If you’re looking for a more permanent, surgical solution to thin lips or lines around the mouth, lip implants may be a better alternative.

Nurturing Your New Smile

Lip Filler Recovery

The path back to your routine is fast. You may experience some swelling or a few small spots of bruising, which is a normal part of the process. We recommend avoiding intense heat or heavy lifting for the first 24 hours to allow the filler to settle. Applying a cold compress can help reduce swelling, and most patients are ready for photos or events within a week after treatment.

The results of a lip filler are visible immediately. However, there may be small areas of bruising or swelling that will recede within approximately three days.

Lip Filler Results

Something to Smile About

You will notice a change in volume when the session ends. However, the final, soft results emerge once the initial swelling subsides, usually within 10 to 14 days.

The results of lip fillers aren’t permanent. They usually last anywhere between 6-12 months, depending on the type of filler used.

Frequently Asked Questions

The appointment itself should take approximately one hour. During your pre-treatment consultation, your injector will discuss your medical history and desired results with you. They will also walk you through what to expect throughout each stage of the procedure, including the after-effects.

One syringe per session is usually enough for most people. This is advisable to help lips maintain their natural shape, but it also means you can see the effects — rather than applying larger doses, which may cause over-plumping of the lips.

There is a mild pinching sensation when the injection is performed, similar to a small sting. A numbing cream containing lidocaine will be applied to prevent pain around the lips. There may also be some soreness or bruising around the injection site afterward.

Don't use any blood-thinning medication, such as aspirin, and avoid fish oils and multivitamins for a few days before and after the appointment. This helps reduce the risk of bruising.

After the appointment, you may experience numbness around the lips from the anesthetic. Swelling is likely to last for 24-48 hours. In some cases, bruising may also occur. This will usually resolve on its own after about three days. If needed, it can be treated at home with ice.

Within a week or two of the appointment, you should see the full benefits of your lip filler. You may want to schedule a follow-up appointment at this stage to assess your results.

One alternative to lip fillers is the Botox lip flip. A Botox lip flip is an injectable treatment in which Botox is administered to the lips to give them a plumper appearance. This is a temporary, non-invasive solution for thinner lips or a gummy smile. The overall effect is slightly more subtle than with dermal lip fillers.

Lip implants are a permanent alternative to lip fillers. Lip implants are a surgical solution to the issue of thin or lined lips. The surgery involves inserting soft silicone implants into the lip area. Lip implants are more expensive than lip fillers and will necessitate a post-surgery recovery period.
