Understanding Facial Aging

What Is a Facelift?

A facelift is a comprehensive cosmetic surgical procedure intended to improve visible signs of aging in the face and neck. Unlike non-surgical treatments or dermal fillers, which offer temporary results, a facelift provides a significant, long-lasting restoration of the facial structure. It targets the deeper tissues and the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS)—the layer of connective tissue and underlying muscle that provides the foundation for our skin. By addressing the SMAS, we ensure the final result looks natural rather than "pulled."

What Is the Facelift Procedure Like?

About the SMAS Facelift Approach

During consultation, our surgical team carefully evaluates each patient’s facial structure, skin health, and muscle tone, while listening to their aesthetic concerns regarding facelift procedures. This information is used to create a personalized treatment plan to achieve the desired facial rejuvenation results, which may also include complementary procedures such as neck lift surgery.

Dr. Breslow specializes in facial rejuvenation and performs SMAS facelift surgery. With this method, the plastic surgeon repositions the facial skin and underlying tissues, removes excess loose skin as needed, and tightens the connective tissue layer known as the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS). This advanced technique enables natural repositioning of the skin across the cheeks, jawline, and neck, resulting in smoother contours without the “overly tight” appearance that can occur with less specialized approaches.

Signs of Facial Aging that are Improved with Facelift Surgery

What Conditions Does a Facelift Address?

Common signs of facial aging include sagging skin across the midface, chin, jawline, and neck. This sagging skin, coupled with a loss of muscle tone throughout the lower face, can lead to the development of “jowls,” causing many men and women to opt for a facelift; in fact, those are common facelift incision locations. In addition, deep creases can form beneath the lower eyelids or from the outer corners of the nose to the outer edges of the mouth. Fortunately, facelift surgery in Paramus performed by our surgeon at The Breslow Center is an effective way to address these aesthetic concerns.

The High-Definition Profile

What Areas Can a Facelift Address?

The facelift focuses on the lower two-thirds of the face and the neck. However, to achieve comprehensive facial rejuvenation, many patients choose to pair their facelift with a brow lift to address deep forehead wrinkles, or an eyelid lift to refresh tired-looking eyes. For those with early signs of aging, a mini facelift offers a less invasive option for tightening the lower face and upper lip.

What Are the Benefits of a Facelift?

Timeless Elegance

The most immediate benefit is a noticeable difference in how you present yourself to the world. By tightening the underlying muscle and removing excess skin, we reveal a more youthful, effortless appearance. Because we focus on repositioning the deeper tissues rather than just stretching the remaining skin, your natural expressions remain intact. It is a permanent investment in your confidence that dermal fillers and minimally invasive options simply cannot match.

Is a Facelift Right for Me?

How Facelift Surgery Can Help

Are you considering a facelift to achieve a more youthful appearance and slow the aging process? Facelift surgery is a great option. The facelift techniques Dr. Breslow uses are among the best in the area.

Over time, the body gradually stops producing elastin and collagen, proteins integral to maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin. Without sufficient elastin and collagen, the skin begins to droop. Fat is displaced. Muscle tone degenerates. These developments can lead to visible signs of facial aging, often compounded or accelerated by hereditary factors, gravity, or lifestyle habits such as smoking or frequent sun exposure.

To help combat noticeable signs of facial aging, we perform facelift surgery at The Breslow Center in Paramus, NJ.

Facelift Results

The Luxury of Longevity

You will see the fundamental appearance of your new profile as soon as the initial bandages are removed. As the weeks pass and the facial tissues heal, the results become increasingly natural-looking.

A well-performed facelift can turn back the clock by ten years or more. While no procedure can stop the aging process entirely, the structural changes made to the deeper tissues and SMAS are permanent. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and protecting your skin from the sun will ensure your rejuvenated look remains vibrant for a decade or longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people will have a good outcome and benefit from a facelift, especially those who have been exposed to a lot of sunlight and have folds, lines, and/or other unwanted aging features. Anyone considering fillers/injections may want to consider facelift surgery. With injectables, it is easy to see the work has been done, and the benefits of facelifts are greater than those of products like Botox.

A facelift is a surgical procedure, so there will be some pain and discomfort. Fortunately, a facelift is generally less painful than other surgeries. Everyone experiences pain differently, so when you attend your consult, please share your questions, concerns, and expectations with your physician.

No, because it is an elective cosmetic procedure, insurance does not typically cover surgery for a facelift.

An SMAS facelift tightens the muscle layer and skin separately, while a deep plane facelift lifts the deeper tissues and fat together, often resulting in a more natural, longer-lasting result.

Incisions are strategically hidden in the hairline and the natural folds of the ear, making them nearly invisible once fully healed.

Yes. Many patients transition from dermal fillers and Botox to a surgical facelift when they feel non-invasive options are no longer providing the desired results.

The cost varies based on the technique used and whether other procedures like an eyelid lift are included. We provide a detailed quote during your initial consultation.
